Socio-economic Drivers of Food Security among Rural Households in Nigeria: Evidence from Smallholder Maize Farmers

Abstract Issues relating to food availability, accessibility/affordability, and utilization remain paramount among different stakeholders such as policymakers academics. Using data from 250 maize farming households in Nigeria, the study used Foster–Greer–Thorbecke probit regression model investigate factors determining security. The insecurity measure shows that 23.2% points of express incidence while 5.5% 1.8% were found have depth severity insecurity, respectively. After controlling for households’ socio-economic demographic characteristics, suggested that, others, value output sold, education, credit access participation government safety nets program significantly influenced security farmers area. Based on our findings, effort should be intensified enhance productivity land through improved production practices. There high-level awareness will increase farmers’ net programs. Thus, at all levels (local, state, federal) adequate budget allocation this course order improve livelihood outcomes households.
